Truth vs. Fiction It was in 1953 when Peter Pan was released by Disney, it was easily acclaimed as 'captivating' by Hollywood Reporters. It was made with such an imagination for the era it was released in. Each charterer was studied and created carefully, for example Captain Hook was inspired by a Spanish King and the original Captain Hook in the 1911 live-action play. Of course it was exaggerated to a certain extent because that is what 'show business' and Hollywood is all about. Captain Hook, Peter Pan 1953. When people see pirates they think of treasure hunts, gold jewelry, rum, stealing etc. When that in fact is half of the truth. You see, pirates were in fact criminals that would steal jewels, money, and often fight but it wasn't as exaggerated as you see in TV or movies. Pirates didn't make their enemies walk the plank, or bury treasure, there was no such thing as pirate 'lingo', they didn't even have a black flag with a skull on it.
